Mixed dal appe is a different version of traditional appe. It is made with mixed lentils such as chana dal, moong dal, urad dal & masoor dal along with rice. It is a protein-rich & delicious recipe cooked is very less oil, thus low fat without compromise on taste. Paired up with mint or coconut chutney, it is served ideally as breakfast or evening snacks.

You can also enhance the nutritional value of appe by adding veggies such as onion, carrot, peas, cabbage, capsicum and sweet corn.

Stepwise recipe to make mixed dal appe:

  1. In a utensil, add ¾ cup chana dal, ½ cup moong dal, ½ cup urad dal and 2 tablespoons masoor dal. Mix everything and wash 2-3 times with water. Soak dals in enough water for 5-6 hours.
  2. In another utensil, add 1 cup rice. Wash it 2-3 times with water and soak it in enough water for 5-6 hours.
  3. Once soaked, drain excess water from rice and dal.
  4. First, grind the dals in a mixer grinder. Grind it to a smooth paste with minimum water.
  5. Now grind the rice to a smooth paste. 
  6. Mix both the batters properly and keep it for fermentation in a warm place for 7-8 hours or overnight. The batter will be almost double after fermentation so select the vessel accordingly such that the batter doesn’t overflow.
  7. Once fermented, the batter is ready to make appe. Make a paste of 3-4 green chilies and ½ inch ginger. Add it to the batter. Add salt as per taste to the batter. Mix everything well. If you want, you can also add veggies such as chopped onion, carrot, capsicum, cabbage, boiled peas & boiled sweet corns at this stage. However, it is optional.
  8. Heat appe pan (appe patra). Pour drops of oil in each dent. Alternatively, you can use a silicon brush to grease dents with oil.
  9. With a spoon, pour the batter in each dent. Cover it with a lid and let it cook for 2-3 minutes.
  10. When on side of the appe turns golden, flip the appe and cook them from the other side. Drizzle more oil if required.
  11. Once appe is cooked properly from all sides, serve them with chutney.
