Gopalkala recipe

Gopalkala is a popular offering made to Shri Krishna on the Janmashtmi festival. It is an easy and quick recipe made with flattened rice (poha), cucumber, curd and coconut with tempering of ghee. It is quite healthy as it contains proteins and fibers and thus serves as an ideal breakfast or snacks.

Stepwise recipe to make Gopalkala:

  1. Wash 1 cup poha 2 – 3 times in water. Drain the water and keep it aside in a bowl.
  2. In another bowl, add 1 cup curd(dahi) and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Whisk till the curd becomes smooth.
  3. In the same bowl, add soaked flattened rice(poha), 1 cup finely chopped cucumber, 2 tablespoons grated fresh coconut, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander and salt as per taste.
  4. Mix everything well.
  5. Heat a pan, add 2 teaspoons clarified butter(ghee) and 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera). When cumin seeds turn golden brown, add chopped ginger(adrak), green chilies and asafoetida (hing). 
  6. Pour the tempering in the bowl containing poha and curd mixture. Mix well
  7. Garnish with pomegranate seeds. Serve immediately or chilled.

  • 1 tablespoon Pomegranate seeds (anardana), optional
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger (adrak), chopped
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt (as per taste)
