Fruit Custard Recipe

fruit custard recipe

Fruit custard is a delicious dessert made with sweet fruits and creamy custard. It is healthy and requires very little cooking. An all-time favorite among kids and adults alike, fruit custard can be made in advance and served chilled. It requires only four ingredients: Fresh fruits, milk, custard powder, and sugar.

In this recipe, I have used vanilla custard powder but you can also use plain custard powder or other flavors such as butterscotch, strawberry, chocolate and Kesar pista.

Stepwise recipe to make fruit custard:

  1. Heat milk in a thick bottomed pan. Add ¼ cup sugar in milk and allow the milk to boil while stirring continuously.
  2. Take 2 tablespoons of custard powder in a small bowl. Add to it, 2 tablespoons of warm milk which is getting heated.
  3. Stir well to make sure it becomes a smooth paste and is free of any lumps.
  4. When the milk turns hot, reduce the flame and add the custard paste (prepared in step 2) in parts while stirring continuously till the custard paste is well incorporated in the milk.
  5. Cook on a low flame for 5 to 6 minutes while stirring continuously until the custard turns thick.
  6. The custard should be thick but runny consistency. The custard will thicken more when it cools down so keep the consistency accordingly. If you want a very thick custard then you can cook the custard for some more time. Cool the custard and then keep it in the fridge to chill it.
  7. Rinse & chop the fruits. It is suggested to use seasonal fruits and avoid citrus fruits as it will curdle the milk. Here I have used apple, papaya, banana, mango & pomegranate. Other fruits that you can add are chickoo, blueberry and strawberry. You can also add dry fruits such as almonds, raisins, cashews & dry figs. Avoid melons such as watermelon & muskmelon as it will release moisture and make custard quite watery.
  8. For serving custard, add the chopped fruits to serving bowls.
  9. Whisk the chilled custard and pour it over the fruits.
  10. Gently mix.
  11. Serve immediately.
