Bread upma is easy to prepare and delicious breakfast or snack made from bread, onions, tomatoes, green chilies, curry leaves, and mild spices. It is basically a variation of traditional upma in which semolina (Rawa/suji) is replaced with bread. While it’s tasty, it is also a great way to utilize leftover bread.
In this recipe, I have used white bread but you can also use brown brain or multigrain bread according to your choice and availability. Also, I have slightly toasted the bread slices before making bread upma but you can skip this step if you wish and directly use bread slices.

Step wise recipe to make Bread Upma:
- Remove corners of bread slices and lightly toast them on a shallow pan (tawa). If the bread is quite fresh, you can keep the corners if you want.
- Now cut toasted bread into small sized squares and keep it aside.
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds(rai). When they crackle, add curry leaves (kadi patta) and green chillies (hari mirch).
- Now add chopped onions and saute for 1 -2 minutes until onions become translucent.
- Now add chopped tomatoes and ½ teaspoon turmeric powder. Saute for 1 – 2 minutes.
- Now add chopped tomatoes and ½ teaspoon turmeric powder. Saute for 1 – 2 minutes.
- Now add ½ cup of water. Stir. Cover and cook till tomatoes are tender. Skip adding water if you are using bread directly without toasting as the bread pieces will become much soggy.
- Add chopped bread pieces and salt.
- Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 -2 minutes while stirring occasionally. Switch off the flame. Add lemon juice (optional) and garnish with coriander or grated coconut.
- Serve hot with tea or coffee.
